Taco
Loco Taco Loco is a charming Mexican restaurant located in the heart of Atlantic City. The dining room seats forty people and is attractively decorated with weavings, serapes and Mexican artwork. They even have a Mexican jukebox for their customers' pleasure. Owner Nefaki Moreno told us that Atlantic City has a sizeable Mexican population and that eighty percent of his customers are Mexican. Nefaki left Oaxaca, Mexico when he was fourteen years old and came straight to Atlantic City where he had friends in the restaurant business. He got a job at Danny's Pizzeria where he worked for seven years and then in 1996, he bought Danny's with two other partners. At twenty-four years old, Nefaki is one of the most enterprising young men that I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. It was always his dream to own a Mexican restaurant and in June of '97, he opened Taco Loco after a major renovation of a building that housed a deli. Nefaki plans to live in Atlantic City until he is thirty-five and then return to his country for an easier way of living. Taco Loco serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and their menu is quite extensive. We started our meal with a basket of tortilla chips served with three different sauces and completed a second basket. We asked Nefaki to recommend some luncheon suggestions and he pleasantly obliged. My dining partner enjoyed Chile Relleno de Queso ($7.95), one of the restaurant's most popular items. This features a Stuffed Poblano Pepper with Oaxaca cheese fried in a fluffy egg batter topped with Mexican sauce. The sauce was prepared with potatoes, raisins, carrots and nuts and was very good. The platter also included refried beans and delicious rice and vegetables. I sampled the Enchiladas ($7.50) which featured three corn tortillas rolled with chicken dipped in red salsa and topped with Mexican cheese. If you like it spicy, this is for you! The platter had a very attractive appearance and was garnished with avocado and rad ishes. Refried beans and rice were also included. After our meal we were served a plate of fresh orange slices and raisins which was the perfect finish. The menu includes a nice selection of appetizers priced from $4.00 to $6.75. Cocktail de Cameron seemed like a good choice prepared with shrimp, cilantro, peppers, onions, avocado and cocktail sauce. Nachos Taco Loco is another popular item made with a crisp tortilla and Mexican sausage, chicken, beef and melted cheese. The menu also includes a variety of salads which are offered with grilled or blackened salmon, chicken or shrimp. The menu also features a good selection of Fajitas and Burritos. Tortas, which are authentic Mexico City style sandwiches, are also available. This includes your choice of meat on a bun with tomatoes, jalapeņos, avocado, onions, cheese, beans and sour cream. There were many interesting seafood entrees, as well, such as Huachinango a la Costeņa ($13.00), or pan-fried red snapper, and Mariscos a la Primavera ($12.99) prepared with shrimp and scallops sauteed with mixed vegetables and garlic sauce over rice. Atlantic City now has five Mexican restaurants and Taco Loco has quickly become one of the favorites. You'll enjoy Nefaki's hospitality and his authentic Mexican cuisine. Nefaki would like to thank his Mexican friends and customers with a special thanks to his wife, Maria, and their two sons, Irvin and Christian. 1510 Pacific Avenue, Atlantic City between Kentucky & New York Avenues 340-8586 340-8599 Open 7 Days 8 am to 1am ~ Delivery & Take-Out ~ Free Parking |
