Smitty's Coffee Shop smittys.jpg (3013 bytes)

Smitty's Coffee Shop in Somers Point caters to local fisherman, early risers and people who like to breakfast on the bay. Owners John and Janine Sullivan are entering their ninth season but the coffee shop has been in existence since the mid-eighties. It is situated behind the Clam Bar and used to be the bait shop for Smith's Marina. Bill Smith bought the marina in 1962, shortly after the legendary nor'easter. His wife still resides there and leases the space for the coffee shop, clam bar and a one hundred and thirty-six slip marina.

Smitty's opens at 6:00 A.M. but Janine is there an hour earlier making coffee for the fisherman. Her husband, John, a Somers Point native whose family owns Sullivan's Cafe, does the cooking with their son John. We had a great breakfast here as well as some lessons in local folklore.

You can't beat the prices at Smitty's. Three egg omelettes range from $3.25 to $3.95 and they're fabulous. My breakfast date ordered the Western & Cheese Omelette and said it was one of the best he's ever eaten. It was served with buttered toast and delicious home fries. I enjoyed a breakfast special - Two Eggs, Bacon, Home Fries and Raisin Toast for $3.45.

The menu includes a good selection of breakfast and lunch items as well as daily specials which are printed on a blackboard. On the day of our visit they featured Waffles with Strawberries or Bananas ($3.75), Texas French Toast ($3.00), Raisin French Toast ($3.00), Chocolate Chip Pancakes ($2.75), a Bacon, Egg & Cheese Croissant ($3.25), Steak, Eggs, Home Fries & Toast ($6.95) and a Veggie Omelette ($4.25). The regular menu offers Hotcakes, Cereal, Omelettes, Creamed Chipped Beef, a variety of side orders and Heart Smart selections such as Scrambled Egg Whites and Egg White Omelettes.

The sandwiches are priced from $2.00 to $3.00 with items like B.L.T.'s, Tuna Salad and Grilled Bacon & Cheese. They also featured a number of luncheon specials like Shrimp in a Basket with Fries ($5.95), Chicken Tenders & Fries ($5.95), a Shrimp Salad Sandwich ($3.75), a Grilled Chicken Breast with Barbecue Sauce ($4.25) and Hamburgers and Cheeseburgers ($2.50 - $2.75).

Smitty's is open year round except for the month of January. This is an old-fashioned coffee shop with a nautical motif and historic memorabilia. It's fun, fast and friendly and the prices are reminiscent of an earlier era.
