In the mood for pancakes? You won't do better than Butterworth's, where pancakes are served all day long at Margate's newest eatery. Butterworth's pancakes are the comfort food of childhood (no doughy centers, here!) and the variety is staggering. You'll find Apple, Strawberry, Blueberry, Potato, Granola, Buckwheat, Peanut Butter, Chocolate Chip, Buttermilk, Corn and French Pancakes, which are made from a secret batter and served with strawberry preserves. Or how about Stuffed French Toast with a cream cheese filling and cinnamon butter? Dieters beware; the breakfast specialties at Butterworth's are hard to resist. Cinnamon Bun French Toast sounded especially appealing but you'll also find eggs, omelettes, cereals and fruits. In addition to an extensive breakfast menu, Butterworth's features a number of breakfast specials that are printed on a blackboard. On the day of our review meal they offered a Spinach and Cheese Omelette with Home Fries and Toast ($5.00), Buckwheat Pancakes ($5.50), Corn Pancakes ($5.00) and a Half of Cantaloupe ($1.00). My dining partner selected Bacon, Two Eggs and Three Pancakes ($6.50) and enjoyed every bite minus the pancake I managed to steal off his plate. We both agreed they were the best pancakes we've ever eaten. I ordered from the lunch menu and opted for a 1/4 Pound Cheeseburger ($4.00) served with lettuce, tomato and a large order of fries and it was delicious. The hot and cold sandwiches are priced from $4.00 to $6.50 and include Corned Beef Specials, Club Sandwiches, Tuna Melts, Hot Turkey, Chicken Parmesan, B.L.T.'s, Tuna and Chicken Salad, Pastrami, Crab Cake and a Char-Grilled Skinless Chicken Breast. They also offer a good variety of grilled sandwiches such as a Grilled Veggie Sub, Reuben and Texas Tommy, to name just a few. Breakfast and lunch are served all day but there are dinner specials as well which are offered from 4:00 to 10:00. On the day of our visit they featured Chicken Parmesan ($12.95), Ravioli ($12.95) and Broiled Scallops ($14.95). Each entree is served with a choice of vegetable and a large sundae. We spoke at length with Gene Dooley, Butterworth's owner and a newcomer to the restaurant business. Dooley, a Philadelphia native, is excited about the business and thrilled with his Margate location. His enthusiasm is contagious, so much so that he convinced me to try Goodnoe's Ice Cream from Bucks County and I ended up ordering a Hot Fudge Sundae with coffee ice cream and wet nuts. Outrageous! My dining partner chose a Vanilla Hot Fudge Sundae and was equally pleased. Butterworth's is the perfect spot for enjoying a sundae in a relaxed atmosphere without waiting in line and eating on the street. You'll find an impressive list of ice cream flavors which may be ordered plain or with a variety of toppings. Milkshakes, Malts and Ice Cream Sodas are also available as well as Belgian Waffles, Brownies, Pound Cake, Carrot Cake and Ice Cream Cake. Butterworth's is located at 9100 Atlantic Avenue at the former site of Uncle Bill's. It's an attractive restaurant that seats 188 people and their upstairs dining room affords a gorgeous view of the ocean. We had great service, here. Our waitress, Mia, was friendly and accommodating. This is a pleasant spot for the entire family and a welcome addition to our island. 9100 ATLANTIC AVE., MARGATE · 822-3400 · |
