Review by Suzin Odlen If you like Mexican food, you'll love the Mexico Restaurant in Atlantic City. Conveniently located on Ventnor Avenue right near the monument, in the building that used to be Pal's Other Room, the Mexico Restaurant offers the finest in authentic cuisine from Oaxaca. Everything here is fresh and prepared to order under the watchful eyes of two brothers, Baruh and Marcos. They've owned the restaurant for three years and do a fantastic business. This is a very attractive dining spot with a pleasant ambiance. We started our meal traditionally with a basket of tortilla chips and delicious salsa - nice n' spicy. We then split an order of Soft Shelled Tacos (Carnitas - $4.75) made with pork, onions and cilantro. They come three to an order and were exceptionally tasty. For our second course, we shared an order of Chicken Fajitas ($7.95) that we really enjoyed. They're prepared with sauteed onions, red and green peppers, guacamole and sour cream in a soft flour tortilla. We would highly recommend either of these dishes. The Fajitas are also made with beef, shrimp or a three-way combination. A couple at the next table ordered the Combination Fajitas and raved about them. The menu features a good selection of Aperitivos to begin your meal, reasonably priced from $4.50 to $6.95. You'll find a variety of Nachos, Chicken Wings and Fingers and seafood specialties such as Cocktail De Camorones and Vuelve A La Vida prepared with baby shrimp, calamari, crabmeat, onions, ketchup, avocado and cilantro. They offer some interesting salads, as well. In addition to Garden, Tossed and Caesar, you'll find Avocado Salad (Ensalada De Aguacate) and Crema De Cangrejo made with mushrooms, artichoke hearts and crabmeat. The menu features a wonderful selection of seafood (mariscos) priced from $10.95 to $12.95. Caldo De Marizcos offers a combination of shrimp, scallops, clams, calamari and a hard-shelled crab. Camarones Al Mojo De Ajo features shrimp sauteed in their special homemade garlic sauce. Pan Fried Red Snapper is also available. The traditional Mexican entrees range from $4.95 for Arroz Con Pollo (Spanish rice with chicken) to $10.95 for Carne Tampiquena (grilled beef steak served with two Enchiladas and guacamole.) There are close to two dozen dishes from which to choose, including many familiar items such as Enchiladas, Burritos, Tamales and Quesadillas. The Mexico Restaurant opens at 11.00 AM, and if you're not ready for lunch, you'll find breakfast dishes, as well. Huevos Mexico Lindo ($3.75) is prepared with two scrambled eggs, beans, onions and jalapeņo peppers. There are many good sandwiches (Tortas), too, like Blackened Chicken Cajun Style ($4.00) with hot cream sauce and Milanesa ($3.75), or lightly breaded beef steak. Our waitress, Jody, who also serves as bartender, suggested dessert and it was fabulous. We shared an order of Flan Napolitano in a delicious caramel sauce. Make sure to ask Jody for one of her special Margaritas made with Cuervo Gold and Grand Marnier, guaranteed to knock your socks off. The Mexico Restaurant seats eighty people in two dining rooms. The restaurant also has a full bar with a good selection of Mexican beer and a cocktail lounge. You'll enjoy this restaurant for lunch, dinner and late night snacks. My dining partner and I are looking forward to a return visit. 3810 Ventnor Ave A.C. 344-0366 Open 7 Days 11am to Midnight |
